Squish’s Roadside Rescue and Remarkable Recovery

Squish arrived at our Katikati clinic in January after being found as a stray kitten on the side of the road. He had serious facial injuries and needed urgent care straight away.

Vet Dr. Kate Millar assessed Squish on arrival and found the main trauma was centred around his muzzle and jaw. With support from Vet Lou Ann, the team took full-body X-rays to check for any other injuries before transferring Squish to our Tauranga clinic for weekend hospitalisation, pain relief, and close monitoring. The good news was that the injuries appeared limited to his head, and he was still eating and using the litter tray.

Two days later, Squish went to surgery with Vet Max, assisted by Vet Kate M. Dental x-rays confirmed a split jaw and a fracture in the lower jaw. During the procedure, the team carefully realigned the jaw and stabilised it with a wire so it could heal properly. Some baby and adult teeth also needed to be removed to support recovery and comfort.

After six weeks of steady healing, Squish returned for his routine castration and to have the jaw wire removed. By this stage, he was doing brilliantly, and his sweet nature had never changed. Now, Squish is happy, comfortable, and full of confidence, which is exactly what everyone hoped for when he first arrived.
