Snow’s Emergency Surgery for Pyometra

Content Warning: This story contains references to internal infection and surgery.

Snow wasn’t acting like herself—drinking and urinating more, showing signs of discomfort, and vocalising in pain. A quick diagnosis from the Katikati team revealed a serious infection, and urgent surgery saved her life.

Twelve-year-old Snow presented with signs of illness, including polydipsia (excessive thirst), frequent urination, and clear discomfort. Vet – Dr. Nina Bos performed a full blood panel and urinalysis and began treatment with antibiotics.

When Snow didn’t improve the next day, she returned to see Vet – Dr. Len Paki, who did a CBC test revealing a high white blood cell count, indicating infection. They added anti-inflammatory pain relief and booked an ultrasound for the next morning.

The ultrasound revealed a closed pyometra—a life-threatening infection in the uterus. Surgery was performed immediately by Vet – Dr. Nina Bos Nina Bos and Vet Nurse – Mel Martin. The operation was successful, and now, just 16 days post-op, Snow is thriving and doing incredibly well.
