Ralph’s Recovery from a Nasty Hot Spot

Golden Retriever Ralph had a small, oozing spot on the top of his head in late September.

Initially, the area wasn’t itching, but it had a bad smell and grew in size over the next few days, spreading down his neck. A smear test revealed intracellular cocci bacteria and an inflammatory response. The diagnosis was a bacterial hotspot.

Vet Louann prescribed Noroclav antibiotics for five days, an anti-inflammatory prednisone course, and suggested applying an Imflamol gel at home after cleaning the area with Chemiscrub.

Despite initial treatment, the lesion worsened and grew. By the next visit with Vet Kate M, the hotspot had spread, and the fur was matted with pus. A sedated cleaning was recommended. Under sedation, Vet Kate clipped the fur, cleaned the raw, inflamed skin, and applied Neosoothe.

Ralph went home with instructions to continue using Chemiscrub, keep an e-collar on for 24 hours, and finish the antibiotic course.
