Maple’s brush with grass seeds

Maple's concerned owner brought her into our Mount clinic after noticing multiple grass seeds in her coat.

Upon clinical examination with Vet Kate Heller, she noticed two areas of swelling in Maple’s armpit area, where it appeared a grass seed might have been lodged. Additionally, multiple grass seeds were found scattered over the body and feet.

Vet Kate recommended sedating Maple for a more thorough examination and treatment, including lancing and probing the affected areas and shaving to check for any additional seeds.

In the end, approximately 20 grass seeds were removed from various areas of her body!

Grass seeds are a significant issue for pets in the Bay of Plenty, particularly in areas with grassy dunes and fields. These seeds have barbed edges that allow them to burrow into the skin, often causing inflammation, abscesses and infection if not caught early. Dogs with long coats or those who frequently roam through tall grasses are at an increased risk. It’s a known hazard in the area, and we frequently see cases where dogs like Maple are affected after spending time on grass.

To help prevent, we always advise If possible, avoid these regions altogether, especially during peak grass seed seasons in the summer. If you do visit these areas, be sure to thoroughly check your dog’s coat, ears, and paws afterwards, as this is often where grass seeds will first burrow into the skin.

Maple is recovering well, and we are sure she will be feeling much more comfortable having the seeds removed from her skin!
