Bugs’ Battle with a Painful Abscess

When Bugs’ owner noticed the telltale signs of a cat bite abscess, they knew exactly what was happening—Bugs had suffered from one in the same spot before. Wanting to relieve his discomfort, they brought him to Mount Maunganui, where Vet Dana and the team provided expert care.

Abscesses are a common problem for outdoor cats, especially after fights with other felines. When Bugs arrived for his appointment, the team confirmed that an abscess had formed, and sedation was required to treat it properly.

Once Bugs was sedated, the team clipped the fur around the wound to fully assess the area. The abscess was then carefully lanced and drained, allowing the built-up infection to be flushed out with sterile saline. To prevent further complications, Dana sutured in a drain, ensuring that any lingering fluid or discharge could exit properly rather than becoming trapped again.

Bugs was sent home with antibiotics and pain relief, and after a short recovery period, he was back to his usual self—happy, comfortable, and healing well.
