Truffles’ Triumph After Trauma
He was having difficulty breathing due to air trapped around both lungs (a pneumothorax), which required emergency chest taps to allow his lungs to fully re-expand. Imaging also revealed multiple injuries to his right hind leg, including a dislocated hip and several fractures, along with bruising and internal bleeding that led to a low red blood cell count (anaemia). He was stabilised with strong pain relief, oxygen support, intravenous fluids, and very close monitoring while we carefully balanced his comfort with his overall stability.
Once Truffles was well enough, further imaging confirmed the severity of his injuries and, after careful discussion with his family, a right hind leg amputation was chosen as the kindest option. Surgery went well with Vet – Dr Sonia McCawe, and Truffles recovered steadily with excellent pain control, antibiotics, and nutritional support. Since then, he has continued to do wonderfully—learning to move confidently on three legs, using the litter tray again, and staying bright and comfortable. We were especially happy to hear that he has even been able to enjoy a recent holiday in Taupō with his family, a lovely milestone that reflects just how well he has adapted and recovered.
