Three Bay of Plenty pets have been crowned the ‘Biggest Losers’ after beating out some tough competition at Tauranga, Te Puna, Katikati, Papamoa Village Vets’ inaugural healthy weight loss program.

Tauranga clinic Lead Nurse Jaimee Roelofs says the program was a great success, saying it was awesome to see so many clients seeing great results with their pets once they were armed with the education and knowledge on how to make a positive impact in terms of weight.

“We had some excellent results across all the clinics, with the grand prize winners followed very very closely by the runner ups! It was a certainly a close call,” she says.

“We’ve also had lots of comments from clients saying that they have seen definite improvements in their pet’s activity levels, a lot more active and wanting to play,” she adds.

During the 12 weeks leading up to the New Year, clients of cats and dogs participating in the program were educated on healthy weight loss for their animals, which was monitored with regular weigh-ins. Inceptives were handed out along the way.

The program was initiated by a couple of our staff who noticed that most days they interacted with clients who own pets that are overweight.

Nurse Jaimee Roelofs said that often clients may have the right intentions and ideas for their pets, but lacked the knowledge, support or education to help their pets lead happy and healthy lives.

“We wanted to create a campaign that was open for clients that are new to the weight loss process but also for clients that have been struggling with weight management for a period of time and are still not quite able to reach their goals and need more help,” she said.

The program was free for all new and existing clients, involved initial and post program weigh ins, photos, education and plenty of incentives including food vouchers and bowls, free services, hamper giveaways and of course the grand prizes of store credit and a Bach Care voucher.

With the inaugural campaign being a great success, plans will be made to repeat it later this year, so if your pet is a little on the heavy side and you’d like to help your pet live a happier and healthier life, watch this space!
