Bodie’s Fish Hook Mishap and a Fast Fix

Bodie is a 12-week-old Lab Sharpei cross who arrived at our Tauranga clinic after an unfortunate run-in with a fishhook. His owners were understandably worried, especially since Bodie was so young and still learning what was safe to chew.

Bodie was a sweet, gentle pup, so the team wanted to keep his experience as calm and positive as possible. Vet Dr Kate Millar decided to sedate him so the hook could be removed safely, without stress or struggling. She also used a local anaesthetic to keep him comfortable during the procedure.

The hook was firmly stuck in Bodie’s lip, so Kate carefully cut off the barbed end first. This allowed the hook to be backed out through the original entry point with minimal tissue damage. Once the hook was removed, the area was thoroughly checked and cleaned, and Bodie was monitored as he woke up.

He recovered quickly and was soon back to his waggy-tailed self, happily accepting treats and soaking up attention before heading home.
